Mdina

St Paul is Mdina’s patron saint, and his legacy is deeply woven into the area’s identity. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Paul was shipwrecked on Malta in 60 A.D. while being taken to Rome for trial. Tradition holds that he met Malta’s Roman governor, Publius, on the very site where Mdina’s cathedral now stands. After Paul healed the governor’s father, Publius converted to Christianity and later became Malta’s first bishop. The cathedral was built in honour of Paul’s miracles and his role in introducing

Christianity to the island. Several other nearby sites also bear his name, including St Paul’s Grotto in Rabat (believed to be where he lived during his three-month stay) and St Paul’s Catacombs, Malta’s largest early Christian burial site.
