Patron Saint
Balzan
The Annunciation
The titular painting of Balzan’s patron saint was created in 1857 by Maltese artist Giuseppe Calleja. It depicts the Archangel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Set within a Renaissance-inspired interior, the scene features a large window opening onto a mountain landscape, with a lily symbolizing Mary's purity on the windowsill. Complementing the painting is the processional statue of the Annunciation, crafted in wood by renowned Maltese sculptor Salvatore Dimech. Delivered to the parish on 28 March 1869, the statue portrays the Archangel Gabriel standing before a kneeling Mary, capturing the moment of divine revelation.
