Luqa

Ħal Luqa is a compact yet historically rich town typical of Malta’s older villages. Its name is believed to derive from the Maltese word luqa meaning “poplar,” while others link it to St Luke, whose name shares similar linguistic roots. Once a quiet rural settlement, Luqa’s fortunes changed dramatically in the 20th century with the construction of Malta International Airport, which still lies within its boundaries today. During World War II the village endured heavy bombardment due to its proximity to the airfield, leaving much of the town devastated. Today, Luqa retains a strong sense of community centred around its

main square and parish church.
