Patron Saint
Gudja
St Mary
The titular statue of the Assumption of Our Lady in Gudja was carved entirely out of solid wood in 1807 by Maltese sculptor Vincenzo Dimech. It holds the distinction of being the oldest statue in Malta depicting the Assumption. The work beautifully captures Our Lady rising heavenward in serene grace,
surrounded by flowing drapery and angelic forms typical of Dimech’s refined craftsmanship. Complementing the statue is the titular painting of the Assumption, completed in 1877 by Italian artist Pietro Gagliardi, which adorns the high altar and enhances the church’s Baroque splendour.
