Lija
The Parish Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus
Lija’s parish church, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus, stands as a Baroque landmark in the village. The parish was established in 1594, and the current church was designed by Maltese architect Giovanni Barbara, with construction commencing in 1694 and concluding in 1702. The bells of Lija’s Parish Church were cast by the esteemed John Taylor & Co. in 1946–47 and represent the first set of large, mechanically tuned bells crafted for Malta, regarded by many as among the finest in the country The church's interior features the Tuscan order with traces of Doric elements.
