Lija

Every year on 6 August, the village of Lija celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, commemorating the New Testament event where Jesus is transfigured and becomes radiant in glory upon a mountain. Unlike many Maltese feasts, Lija steadfastly holds its celebration on this specific date, regardless of the day of the week. The festivities encompass religious processions, band marches, and spectacular aerial and ground fireworks that illuminate the night sky. Food stalls line the streets, offering local treats like nougat and qubbajt (traditional Maltese nougat wrapped in delicate wafer paper), adding to the festive atmosphere. A popular chant among the villagers encapsulates the spirit of the day: Eviva s-sitta t'Awissu, Eviva s-Salvatur, Eviva n-nies ta' Ħal Lija, U l-murtali tal-kulur!
