Marsa

Located at the inner reaches of the Grand Harbour, Marsa is one of Malta’s most historically strategic localities. Its name derives from the Arabic word marsa, meaning a harbour or anchorage, reflecting the area’s long-standing connection with maritime activity. The sheltered creeks of Marsa attracted settlement since ancient times, with evidence of Phoenician ports and Roman remains discovered

nearby. During the Great Siege of 1565, Ottoman troops camped in the area before their eventual defeat. Later, under British rule, the region was transformed through port development and the draining of marshlands that once caused widespread malaria. Today Marsa remains an important industrial and commercial hub, with its harbour, sports facilities, and transport links continuing to shape the locality’s identity.
