Mqabba

The patronal devotion of Mqabba honours the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorating the belief that Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. At the centre of this devotion stands the village’s treasured processional statue, sculpted in 1836 by Alessandro Farrugia. The statue is a fine example of serpentine Baroque sculpture, depicting the Virgin in graceful movement as she rises upon clouds. Its elegant pose and expressive design make it one of the most admired Marian statues in Malta.
