Mqabba

Dominating Mqabba’s main square is the Parish Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, a landmark that has shaped the village’s identity for centuries. The parish itself was founded in 1598, originally centred on the nearby Church of St Basil. Construction of the present parish church began in 1663, eventually becoming the spiritual heart of the community. Built on the site of earlier chapels dedicated to the Assumption and the Annunciation, the church was officially dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in 1699. During World War II, the building suffered heavy damage,

including the collapse of the dome, but restoration works completed in 1947 returned the church to its former prominence.
