Msida

Each July, Msida bursts into celebration during the feast of St Joseph, one of the town’s most anticipated events. The festa lasts for over a week and blends traditional religious ceremonies with lively street celebrations, band marches, and fireworks displays. What makes Msida’s feast particularly famous is il-Ġostra, a daring local tradition where participants attempt to climb a long, well-greased pole suspended above the sea. The goal is to reach the flag or scarf at the end, though most competitors end up plunging into the harbour to the cheers of onlookers. The spectacle draws large crowds and adds a uniquely playful twist to the otherwise solemn festa traditions.
