Feast of St Julian
The feast of Saint Julian, celebrated on the last Sunday of August, is one of the most distinctive village festas in Malta. The streets are decorated with colourful banners and lights, while bands and fireworks create a festive atmosphere around Spinola Bay.
One of the most famous traditions is il-Ġostra, where competitors attempt to run along a greased pole suspended above the sea to capture flags at its end before falling into the water. Another unique tradition is Musketterija, where hunters fire blank cartridges filled with black powder from the church roof as the statue of the saint emerges, recalling the patron’s association with hunting.
