Birgu

Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, is one of Malta’s historic Three Cities and among the island’s oldest fortified towns. Perched along the Grand Harbour, Birgu became the Knights of St John’s first headquarters after their arrival in Malta in 1530. Its winding streets, auberges, and palaces are steeped in history, while the waterfront is lined with cafés and restaurants overlooking the marina. Key landmarks include Fort St Angelo, which played a pivotal role in the Great Siege of 1565, and the Inquisitor’s Palace. Birgu is also famous for Birgufest, held each October, when the town is lit by thousands of candles and opens its historic buildings to visitors.
