Patron Saint
Birgu
St Lawrence
The titular statue of St Lawrence in Birgu is one of the most distinctive in Malta, as it is the only one clothed in real garments. The head of the statue is of Spanish origin, while the torso was crafted locally, creating a unique artistic blend. St Lawrence himself is remembered as one of the early Christian martyrs of Rome, famed for his courage and charity, particularly his role in distributing church treasures to the poor before his execution in 258 AD. The church also preserves two important silver reliquaries containing relics of the saint, along with several works of art dedicated to him, including ceiling paintings by Ignazio Carlo Cortis and Giuseppe Calì.
