Safi
St Paul
Safi’s patron saint is St Paul, honoured for bringing Christianity to Malta after being shipwrecked on the island. The village’s titular statue of the saint was sculpted in the mid-19th century by Alessandro Farrugia, known as Mastru Xandru, a talented apprentice of Mariano Gerada.
Commissioned in 1841, the work was inspired by Melchiore Gafà’s celebrated statue at St Paul’s Shipwreck Church in Valletta. Completed in 1843, it depicts St Paul holding the Scriptures and the sword of faith, symbolising his role as apostle and teacher.
