Town

San Gwann

San Ġwann is a relatively modern suburban town whose rapid growth reflects Malta’s post-war development. Once a rural area made up of scattered farmland and small hamlets, it gradually evolved into a distinct community during the mid-20th century as new housing expanded across the surrounding valleys of Wied Għomor, Wied il-Ballut and Wied Għollieqa.

Despite its contemporary skyline, the area’s history stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries such as prehistoric cart ruts near Sant Andrija, Roman tombs and the remains of the Ta’ Ċieda Roman Tower suggest that the land supported ancient agricultural communities long before the modern town took shape.
