Patron Saint

San Gwann

Our Lady of Lourdes

The patronal devotion of San Ġwann is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, inspired by the Marian apparitions reported in Lourdes, France, in 1858. The town’s beloved titular statue, imported from Italy in 1960, depicts the Virgin Mary crowned and surrounded by a silver halo adorned with twelve stars, symbolising her heavenly queenship.

Crafted with intricate details including silver ornaments, garlands, and decorative rays, the statue holds deep significance for the local faithful. Its installation marked the beginning of public devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes in the locality.
