Construction on the Parish Church of Our Lady of Lourdes began in 1949 under the guidance of the Capuchin friars, who were entrusted with caring for the rapidly growing population between Birkirkara and Sliema. The church was completed in 1959 and consecrated in 1962, eventually becoming a parish in 1965.

Inside the church stands the revered titular statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, which arrived from Italy in 1960. The statue is distinguished by its silver halo of twelve stars, crown, and decorative garlands, with large radiating wooden beams forming a dramatic backdrop, a feature installed with the help of Royal Air Force engineers stationed in Malta at the time.
